Handiham EchoLink Net

The Monday evening EchoLink net is at 19:00 United States Central Standard time, which translates to 00:00 GMT Tuesday morning during North American Daylight Time. In the winter, the GMT schedule shifts one hour to 01:00 GMT. 145.45 FM in the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul Minnesota, and EchoLink, 19:00 United States Central Time Mondays: Use your EchoLink search function and look for N0BVE or node 89680. Connect from any Internet-enabled computer in the world, and come out on Twin Cities repeater N0BVE on 145.450. There is also a 11:00 United States Central Time EchoLink net Monday through Friday on the same node and repeater. Alternate node: If you do not have ports forwarded, you may not hear N0BVE, which is an EchoIRLP-enabled node. Instead connect to KA0PQW-R, node 267582. If you have a correction in any part of the net schedule, please e-mail wa0tda@arrl.net.

Slacker sun still disappoints

Solar image from SOHO

Remember that you do have an alternative to HF for worldwide communications: EchoLink!

As if we needed to be told, there is news out today that the sun is, well, not really newsworthy - at least as far as solar activity is concerned. In fact, the very lack of solar activity has now become the news story. Amateur radio operators worldwide have been waiting and waiting and waiting some more for the sun to perk up and enter the new cycle. Sunspots, which are connect to good HF band conditions, have been reluctant to make their appearance, surprising solar weather forecasters!

Chris, KG0BP, and Carl, N8NSD, take a few minutes to visit at the Handiham boothWelcome to Handiham World!

Photo: Chris, KG0BP, and Carl, N8NSD, take a few minutes to visit at the Handiham booth during HAMVENTION®.

Last week we were at HAMVENTION®, and with so much time out of the office and on the road, it takes a little time to catch up with all of the usual office duties. I have some photos with captions for you later on. I don't want this particular edition to be all about the hamfest, so in upcoming weeks I'll be sharing some thoughts with you on various aspects of the world's largest amateur radio get-together.

Welcome to Handiham World!

Handihams at Dayton Hamvention 2007 - Pat peeking over displayPhoto: Here I am, peeking over the top of the 2007 display at the Handiham booth during HAMVENTION®.

This will be a shorter edition of your Handiham World, since we are preparing to depart for Dayton. Visit Courage Center's Handiham System while you are at HAMVENTION®. We will be at booth number 332-C, where our display will include a voice-controlled Icom IC-706M2G with audio feedback. This system, called command & control, allows a blind user who also has very limited muscle control, to operate the transceiver, changing frequencies, modes, and other functions entirely by voice. The system then tells the user what it has done. The same headset microphone that controls the system by command is also used to modulate the rig. It's really a pretty cool deal, thanks to developers Lyle, K0LR, and Steve, WB5KIA.

Portable Radios - Ready for Ham Radio Emergency Communications

I was impressed with the portability of this ham radio emergency communications system. This photo was from Dayton HAMVENTION 2005, but similar exhibits have been at the 2006 and 2007 shows. I expect to see them again, with improvements, at this year's show.

The system covers VHF and HF bands, and is housed in an orange plastic box that allows the user to quickly deploy in an emergency, rather than having to gather up radios, connectors, and assorted parts when time is of the essence. The plastic box can be closed to keep out rain. The orange color is highly visible.

It's one of many good ideas that you can learn about when you visit Dayton, so we hope to see you there.

Handiham Net Schedule Updated: Extended CW Net times, new EchoLink Node

Handiham Net Schedule, Effective May 12, 2008

Join our worldwide EchoLink net every day but Sunday. All licensed operators are welcome. The net is controlled but informal, and there is no need to be a Handiham member to participate. Sometimes the net control station will throw out a discussion topic to liven things up! Listen in a few times if you are shy, and then take the plunge and throw out your callsign.

Days: Monday through Saturday, and Sunday if anyone wants to take an informal session.
