KNFB Reader review

KNFB Reader review by volunteer Gene, K0TIW

In this first impressions review, Gene, K0TIW, tries out the KNFB Reader

KNFB Reader Nokia cell phone close upThe small size of the instrument is impressive. The key pad for the phone is one of the easiest to manipulate that I have ever seen in a cell phone. All of the buttons are away from other buttons on all 4 sides. The reading and computer function buttons are a little more difficult to use, but still quite useable. The voices are very easily understood and do have a volume control. The earpiece does come in a hard-wired form, or in a Bluetooth form as well.

Within 15 minutes of the instrument being placed in my hands, I was able to read or recognize a 1 and a 5 dollar bill which required the use of only one key and with no orientation process. I also read a menu, a personal-business card, a page from a magazine, and one of my relatives, not knowing anything about it, placed some reading material in front of me which was in italics and with some scroll material along the side of the page, and this the reader did have difficulty with. However, it was still a learning process since the machine sat there and beeped and eventually informed me that it was going to reset itself. It still had difficulty with it so the representative suggested that we go to something else and I reset the machine to do that.

Contact Handihams Contest

Avery looks at a paper, hiding his face.Avery announces another one of his contests.

Welcome once again to my humble QTH. We are going to have a Handiham Contest.

We have a large number of Handiham 40th Anniversary QSL cards left from our special event station at the last Minnesota Radio Camp. We want to send them out even though it’s 2008 (we are quite frugal, you know), but you are going to have to earn them. So I am announcing the Avery’s QTH use-up-our-old-QSL-cards contest!

Earth Day in the Ham Shack

April 22 is Earth Day, which is supposed to remind everyone that we should try to live as “green” as possible, producing less waste, using only the energy we need, and generally doing our part to make the environment around each of us a better place.

All of the Earth Day stories prompted me to take a look around the ham shack here at WA0TDA.
