Avery: Summer Radio Camp

We are starting to get ready for our Summer Radio Camp, which is coming up in August. It is one solid week of Amateur Radio and, on the last day, VE's from a local club give exams to people wishing to take them.

Where else do you have a wheelchair-accessible pontoon boat with a 20 meter vertical, an Icom IC-718 transceiver and all of Lake George for the ground? They get out very well in case you didn't guess. Lake George is about 15 miles from Itasca State Park, The headwaters of the MIGHTY MISSISSIPPI, and they have field trips over there for radio campers who want to go.

Visit us at HAMVENTION!

Visit Courage Center's Handiham System while you are at Dayton HAMVENTION®. We will be at booth number 332-C, which is indoors not too far from the forum rooms.

HAMVENTION is the world's largest ham radio get-together, the place to meet your fellow amateur radio operators, learn about new technologies, and shop for new equipment. All of the "movers and shakers" in ham radio will be there, so it's fun, exciting, and a place to learn and grow.

Dates are May 16, 17, & 18, 2008.

JAWS Users website offers text tutorials

Often times it is difficult to get technical support when you need it, right? And some of us like to try to figure things out ourselves before calling for help anyway. Screenreading software programs are wonderful, but using them can be daunting, especially for users who have not grown up learning this technology through their school years.

NASA Launches Google Earth app that shows new "4D" live model of Earth's ionosphere

From NASA:

April 30, 2008: Today, NASA-funded researchers released to the general public a new "4D" live model of Earth's ionosphere. Without leaving home, anyone can fly through the layer of ionized gas that encircles Earth at the edge of space itself. All that's required is a connection to the Internet.

"This is an exciting development," says solar physicist Lika Guhathakurta of NASA headquarters in Washington, DC. "The ionosphere is important to pilots, ham radio operators, earth scientists and even soldiers. Using this new 4D tool, they can monitor and study the ionosphere as if they're actually inside it."

Daily On The Air (DOTA)

I've noticed that there isn't much activity on my local repeater. Perhaps I'm just not listening at the right times, but I've sampled the repeater throughout the day on different days of the week, and aside from some scheduled net activity, users seem to be maintaining "radio silence"!
