What coax should I use?

Question:

The repeaters I want to use are all just a bit too far away for me to work with an indoor antenna or a handheld radio. I want to install an outdoor antenna so that I can use several different VHF and UHF repeaters. I already have a dual-band 2m/70cm vertical antenna, but what kind of coax should I use? I am thinking about RG-58 or RG-8X, because they are cheaper and easy to work with than the thicker RG-8 or RG-213. My cable run will be about 100 feet.

Beam antenna rises above flowering crabapple trees

We are definitely in the summer ham radio doldrums. I can tell that we have reached this time of year by some of the comments I hear, usually by word of mouth or by e-mail:

FCC ANNOUNCES JUNE 25 BROADCAST ENGINEERING FORUM

FCC Round Seal

One of the goals of the National Broadband Plan is to evaluate the reallocation of spectrum from the broadcast television bands, including rule-makings regarding service areas, distance separations, channel-sharing, and other mechanisms to achieve its spectrum reallocation goals. In support of such future rule-makings, the FCC has invited a number of broadcast industry engineers and technical experts in related fields to convene in four working sessions intended to address certain technical challenges and opportunities facing the broadcast industry today.

June Events by N1YXU

Events by N1YXU

Dayton Hamvention is now behind us, but... Field Day is just about here!

I have to admit that Field Day is one of my favorite annual amateur radio events. It is a lot of fun to hang out with friends, welcome visitors to our operations, and make a few contacts as well. I hope that you are able to participate in a local Field Day event. Get on the air and have a good month with amateur radio.

Until next month….
