History & Purpose

We need information about the history and any interesting stories related to PICONET. If you can help, drop me a line at wa0tda@arrl.net. I will be happy to credit you as a contributor to this resource.

PICONET stands for "Public Interest Convenience Or Necessity".

The net meets daily except Sundays on 3.925 MHz single-sideband phone. Net times vary somewhat by season, and Saturday nets are held on in the mornings.

Typical morning net times are 9:00 to 11:00 United States Central Time (15:00 to 17:00 GMT. The times are adjusted to Daylight Savings Time in the summer, making the GMT times an hour earlier, 14:00 to 16:00.

Typical afternoon net times are 15:00 to 17:00 United States Central Time, which is 21:00 to 23:00 GMT. A similar adjustment is made for Daylight Time in the summer.

As the name of the net implies, public service is a net function. Formal and informal radio traffic may be handled on the net, but most net activity is completely informal, though directed through a net control station (NCS).

To participate in the PICONET, simply listen on 3.925 MHz, and check in with the NCS as directed. Typically, the NCS will call for "emergency & priority traffic" first, then mobile stations and "short-timers", or stations who cannot stay around for the entire net, then regular check-ins. Some net controls will ask for stations with traffic before the general check-ins. Once the net is underway, it is a place to meet & greet, just chat, and have fun.

Please check in whenever you can!
