Reciprocal Operation

One question that comes up with remote base station operations is that of reciprocal operation. This refers to a situation where the holder of a non-USA amateur radio license wishes to operate a USA remote base station, such as W0EQO or W0ZSW.

Some of our remote base users have dual licenses, holding a license where they live, such as Germany or New Zealand, but also holding USA licenses issued by the FCC.  These users would simply use their USA license privileges and identify with their USA callsign and the callsign of the remote base station that they are using, just as would be done by any other USA user.

A station from Canada, which has reciprocal operating privileges with the USA, would follow  the relevant section of the FCC rules pertaining to reciprocal operating privileges:

(a) For an amateur service license granted by the Government of Canada:

  1. The terms of the Convention Between the United States and Canada (TIAS No. 2508) Relating to the Operation by Citizens of Either Country of Certain Radio Equipment or Stations in the Other Country;

  2. The operating terms and conditions of the amateur service license issued by the Government of Canada; and

  3. The applicable rules of this part, but not to exceed the control operator privileges of an FCC-granted Amateur Extra Class operator license.
